The ancient Greeks believed that sage gave people immortality. The ancient Egyptians considered the plant sacred because it could save or confer life. The ancient Romans had great respect for sage and therefore accompanied the harvest with special rituals. The French called it "Greek tea", while the Chinese called it "Greek sprout".
In Crete, where sage grows in abundance, it is traditional to harvest on the first and second days of May and before sunrise.
Sage and rosemary are recommended for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. It also helps with indigestion, bronchitis, cough, asthma, memory problems, angina, inflammation of the mouth and throat and excessive sweating.
